Tibia Deformity In Child
By: Dr Juanito S. Javier
|
This is the case of R.P., a two year old boy who at age one year had osteomyelitis of the left tibia. He underwent debridement and the leg was protected with a cast for a total of eight months. After removal of the plaster it was noted that he had a progressive deformity of the leg. The patient subsequently consulted at the Pediatric Orthopaedic Section and Ilizarov and Limb Deformity Service of the Department of Orthopaedics, Philippine General Hospital.
Pre Op

On physical examination, R.P. has a marked anterolateral bowing of the right leg. There was also shortening of the leg. No draining sinus was present and the limb has intact neurovascular status. |

Post Op
|
R.P. underwent application of Ilizarov Circular Fixator. The pseudoarthrosis site was not surgically explored. The aim of the fixation was to provide bone fragment stability in order to promote bone healing. The deformity was also gradually corrected. |

Progress
|
The angular deformity has already been fully corrected one month post surgery. X-rays below show progressive consolidation of the pseudoarthrosis. |
